Their reggae version of the original by Neil Diamond was one of the many cover versions various artists have tried with varying degrees of success. None was as popular as the version by UB40 though. Neil Diamond later gave them a hat-tip by performing their version of the song on tour.</span></p>

<p><span style="color: #3b3b3b;"><span style="color: #ff0000;">I Will Survive</span> by American Alt-rock band Cake, one of the most underrated bands <em>ever</em>, from their &#8217;96 debut album <span style="color: #ff0000;">Fashion Nugget</span>. What makes this song better than <span style="color: #ff0000;">Gloria Gaynor</span><span style="color: #ff0000;">&#8216;s</span> awesome original ? Is it John McCrea gruff, surly vocals? The brilliant electric guitar riff? The bass line? The plaintive, wailing trumpet solo? Maybe its all of them&#8230;</span></p>

<div><span style="color: #3b3b3b;">Pop-Rock group <span style="color: #ff0000;">Scissor Sisters</span> did the unthinkable, a dance version of Pink Floyd&#8217;s Comfortably Numb. It got them a record deal and later became their first single from their self- titled debut album in 2004. Some people like it, some run for the hills screaming &#8220;SACRILEGE&#8221; with their hands over their ears. Your mileage may vary&#8230;.</span></div>

<p>In 2005 antediluvian pop star <span style="color: #ff0000;">Paul Anka</span> did an album of Swing Jazz covers of songs including some truly bizzare stuff like a Jazz version of Nirvana&#8217;s &#8216;<span style="color: #ff0000;">Smells Like Teen Spirit</span>&#8216;. Kurt Cobain must be spinning in his grave. One of the few songs on the album that <em>didn&#8217;t</em> make you want to burn your ears off was his version of Van Halen&#8217;s epic 80&#8242;s track <span style="color: #ff0000;">Jump!</span>. For some reason the lyrics are actually quite well suited to a jazz song and this is the one song from this truly <em>bizarre</em> album where Mr. Anka <em>hasn&#8217;t</em> brutally raped the original tune.</p>
<p>Here is the brilliant David Lee Roth original.</p>
<div><object width="480" height="348" data="http://www.dailymotion.com/swf/x19jho_van-halen-jump_music&amp;colors=background:FF0000;&amp;related=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.dailymotion.com/swf/x19jho_van-halen-jump_music&amp;colors=background:FF0000;&amp;related=1" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /></object></div>

<p><span style="color: #3b3b3b;">So, for no apparent reason here are three/four great songs about California.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #3b3b3b;"> </span></p>
<p><span style="color: #3b3b3b;">Starting with David Lee Roth&#8217;s &#8216;California Girls&#8217;</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #3b3b3b;"> </span></p>
<p><span style="color: #3b3b3b;">David Lee Roth was the lead singer for Van Halen during the </span><em><span style="color: #3b3b3b;">only</span></em><span style="color: #3b3b3b;"> period they didn&#8217;t suck. Eddie Van Halen is probably one of the most innovative and talented guitarists </span><em><span style="color: #3b3b3b;">ever</span></em><span style="color: #3b3b3b;"> but he </span><em><span style="color: #3b3b3b;">did</span></em><span style="color: #3b3b3b;"> have a nasty habit of falling out with lead singer after lead singer, so the band was fronted by a number of different people of which David Lee was the best combo with the mercurial Mr. Van Halen and they had a number of hits like Panama, Jump and Ain&#8217;t talkin&#8217; About Love (Which was later remade by Apollo 440 into the trippy &#8216;Ain&#8217;t Talkin&#8217; Bout Dub&#8217;</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #3b3b3b;"> </span></p>
<p><object width="425" height="344" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/cmbhfI8f_Ek&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/cmbhfI8f_Ek&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /></object></p>
<p><span style="color: #3b3b3b;"> </span></p>
<p><span style="color: #3b3b3b;">Next up, two versions of the <em>endlessly</em> covered &#8216;California Dreamin&#8217;, the original version written by The Mamas and the Papas in 1963 that was a huge hit in &#8217;65 and then Bobby Womack&#8217;s R&amp;B version from &#8217;68.</span><span style="color: #3b3b3b;"><span id="more-550"></span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #3b3b3b;"> </span></p>
<p><object width="425" height="344" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/SDhDeAzbGsE&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/SDhDeAzbGsE&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /></object></p>
<p><span style="color: #3b3b3b;"> </span></p>
<p><object width="425" height="344" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/-wI6uAOHzvo&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/-wI6uAOHzvo&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /></object></p>
<p><span style="color: #3b3b3b;"> </span></p>
<p><span style="color: #3b3b3b;">And finally hugely talented poet and rapper Tupac Shakur&#8217;s 90&#8242;s anthem &#8216;California Love&#8217;.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #3b3b3b;"> </span></p>
<p><object width="425" height="344" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/FWOsbGP5Ox4&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/FWOsbGP5Ox4&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /></object></p>
<p><span style="color: #3b3b3b;"> </span></p>
<p><span style="color: #3b3b3b;">Happy New Year again. And if </span><em><span style="color: #3b3b3b;">anyone</span></em><span style="color: #3b3b3b;"> leaves a comment like &#8220;Dude! You left out Hotel California! The Eagles Man!&#8221; I will </span><em><span style="color: #3b3b3b;">have</span></em><span style="color: #3b3b3b;"> to come kill you.</span></p>
