So, for no apparent reason here are three/four great songs about California.
Starting with David Lee Roth’s ‘California Girls’
David Lee Roth was the lead singer for Van Halen during the only period they didn’t suck. Eddie Van Halen is probably one of the most innovative and talented guitarists ever but he did have a nasty habit of falling out with lead singer after lead singer, so the band was fronted by a number of different people of which David Lee was the best combo with the mercurial Mr. Van Halen and they had a number of hits like Panama, Jump and Ain’t talkin’ About Love (Which was later remade by Apollo 440 into the trippy ‘Ain’t Talkin’ Bout Dub’
Next up, two versions of the endlessly covered ‘California Dreamin’, the original version written by The Mamas and the Papas in 1963 that was a huge hit in ’65 and then Bobby Womack’s R&B version from ’68. Read more…
