Blogo: Desktop Applications vs. ‘The Cloud’
Since the time I started doing this site (I hate calling it a blog) I have been searching for a decent way to post without using the online WordPress interface. Call me old school but I hate online apps. I always have. Unlike most people I know I have clients for almost everything I do on the internet. I like using a POP client for e-mail (Mail.app) and iChat for Google Talk.
WordPress isn’t bad. Really. It has always been very stable and the current version (2.7, I think) is a huge improvement over its predecessor in terms of its user interface. It’s speedy too if you have Google Gears (Something that lets websites cache content to your computer to be more desktop app-like) installed. My problem is that Gears doesn’t work in my browser of choice, Opera and more importantly I don’t trust web based editors.
I was thinking about this the other day and have figured out what this habit (or preference) stems from. A lot of people I know who grew up in the same era I did, have the same preference for desktop apps and it stems from a word that brings up really, really bad memories.
People Everyday
‘People Everyday’, the utterly smooth and mellow hit single from Atlanta based hip-hop group Arrested Development’s 1992 debut album ’3 Years, 5 Months & 2 Days in the Life Of…’.
The album won them a Grammy for best new artist and spawned a ton of hit singles.
Then the band’s second album tanked and they broke up. The group is still around but not in it’s original composition. One of the group’s members, Dionne Farris recorded a mildly successful solo album in 1994, called ‘Wild Seed-Wild Flower’ which did have a memorable hit single, ‘I Know‘.
P.S. ‘Arrested Development’ is not to be confused with the sitcom of the same name, which is/was one of the funniest shows on television a couple of years ago.
Five potential vehicular homicide victims.

1. Auto Rickshaws or three-wheeled tempos at their top speed of 40 kmph, spewing fumes in the right lane.
2. Person/Persons honking incessantly while in gridlocked traffic.
3. Person/Persons with car that is obviously faster than mine, driving at 40 kmph in front of me. The pedal on the right makes you go faster douchebag. Fucking use it!
4. Call centre cabs weaving through traffic. Actually any white MPV with yellow plates.
5. Person riding a two-wheeler, cutting me off in traffic while reading a fucking SMS on his cellular phone.
Design Issues: Helvetica and Primary colours

So last night I finally got around to watching Gary Hustwit’s film about design and typography, ‘Helvetica‘.
The film explores the development, meteoric rise to fame and finally the near ubiquity of the font Helvetica. If you are reading this and wondering ‘Geez. A feature length film about a font?’ You should probably close this window right now.Keep reading if you do think fonts are interesting and know what a serif is and why it came about, or if like me, you happened to share a hostel room with two extremely nerdy graphic designers while at college. Davis & Coltrane: Enough Said.
Enemies
This song has been bouncing around in my head for years. I heard it in an ad spot ages ago and finally found it. It’s by a couple of brothers from Ohio USA who go by the name ‘The Head Set’.
Trivia: They recorded this album, ‘Way Past Used’ in the same studio which the ‘Pixies’ recorded their awesome album ‘Doolittle’(But that’ll be another post.)
If you click the album art you can follow the link and grab a copy of the song. (Kiss my behind music labels!)
Also I finally gave up on my crap JBL Creature II speakers and hooked up our old Sony Hi-Fi to my computers. I am NEVER going back to a satellite + sub speaker system again.
Coz I’m cool like dat.
‘Cool Like Dat’, the Grammy Award winning lead single from the 1992 album ’Reachin’ by one hit wonder, Digable Planets. It’s amazing that their weird, funky blend of jazz and hip-hop never really caught on. (Beyond the success of this track)
Shakespeare ALERT!
We have a wannabe novelist coming up with headlines at the Indian Express. I’ve written before about the ridiculous amount of Obama mania in India but this is just getting out of hand.
About a month ago, after he was confirmed as ‘President Elect’ our country went into a huge tizzy about how he hadn’t made an official call to India and for days ‘pundits’ were weighing in with ‘expert opinions’ about it. ‘India is important’, ‘He will call us last’ Gimme a fucking break.
How many people who watched the inauguration yesterday know a single thing about Mr Obama? Quick question. Which group was the biggest single contributor to Obama’s campaign fund? Stumped?
It was the sub-prime mortgage lenders. Does the term ‘sub-prime crisis’ ring a bell?
Obama’s campaign finance manager?
Penny Pritzker. She used to be at the head of one of the larger sub-prime lenders, Superior Bank. Federal regulators closed the 2.3 million US $ bank in 2001. The bank’s borrowers and depositors suffered huge losses. The bank’s owners (Pritzker included) of course, could still end up making a profit from the bank’s collapse. There have been legal charges including allegations of racketeering levelled against them.
You think any of this will matter now that Mr. Obama is el presidenté?
No fucking way.
