ONMYRADIO

December 31st, 2008

Musiq SoulchildSo. Earlier this month I snagged a pre-release copy (cough…  piratebay… cough)  of soul singer Musiq Soulchild’s new album ‘ONMYRADIO’.

Despite the fact that he never really made it big, this crooner from Philly is still one of my favourite soul singers from this decade. (The others being D’Angelo and Jill Scott)

He had his fifteen minutes back in 2000 with his debut album Aijuswanaseing off which the hit single ‘Just Friends’ still has to be one of the coolest, funkiest combos of hip-hop and soul ever with its brilliant beat-box intro’d bass line. Too bad it was the on the soundtrack for one of the shittiest films ever: Nutty Professor 2. Watch the video here, since Youtube has disabled embedding of the clip.

He followed  it up with the albums Juslisen,SoulStar and LuvanMusiq. (He dropped out of school before they got around to teaching spelling and grammar obviously) He had a few more hits and all of them had the same, distinctive if slightly repetitive sound which led to more than a few hit singles. From Clinton to Bush to Obama: The BS goes on.

December 30th, 2008

So after having about 7 drinks more than I should have, on the weekend, I fell ill and skulked at home watching some very interesting films, two of which you can watch on Google Video. The first of which is this one.

‘His Life’ is a chilling look at the life of former US president, Bill Clinton. But not the Clinton most people are familiar with, the dude who played the saxophone, found interesting uses for cigars, and had a very narrow definition of the word sex. This film originally came out in 2004 and it’s name is a play on the name of his book ‘My Life’.

It shows how easily the media kept people distracted from the Clintons’ dirty dealings, abetment of organized crime and communist spying while focusing on Clinton’s sexual escapades. The second half of the film is particularly eye-opening as it goes into great detail about the staggering amount of people with knowledge of the Clintons’ nefarious activities that have disappeared, allegedly committed suicide or been killed in shootings or plane crashes. This also includes a number of women who claimed to have had relations with the former president or were about to go public with such allegations. Read more…

So I’ve been listening to some songs I loved at the beginning of this year and this one is another of those single repeat types. From Talib Kweli’s 2007 Album ‘Ear Drum’. I dunno if this one has been released as a single but its quite good inspite of featuring LAME.i.am (The artist formerly known as WILL.i.am)

The other really great track from this album is ‘Go With Us’. It has an energetic rim-shot and snare heavy bassline that really gets you amped (and I cant find it on Youtube)

The record companies in thier infinite, ass backwards wisdom are issuing take down notices for music videos from Youtube, so if the link doesn’t work in a couple of days don’t come crying to me.

Religion:1 ‘The Gays’:0

Fuck the Pope

The new Pope (Pope Benedict XVI) says, in his end of year year speech, that saving humanity from homosexual or transsexual behaviour was just as important as saving the rainforest from destruction! Haaaa Haaaa!!!

Why doesn’t he just cut the BS and say that all ‘the gays’ are gonna burn in hell? That’ll scare those Godless Butt-pirates!

Just the kind of mindless, intolerant crap you want to be teaching your kids.

P.S. I’ve said this before. The previous pope wasn’t so bad. Where did they find this lout? The 16th Century?

Seasons Greetings.

December 23rd, 2008

All right. Fuck it. Merry Christmas. There. Being non-denominational during the holidays sucks and is too difficult. It’s like a few years back when I started writing CE (for Common Era) instead of AD (for Anno Domini) and all I got was quizzical looks and brain dead questions.

So here goes, two of my favourite Christmas songs. One immensely sad and melancholy and one just really happy and carefree but both equally beautiful. So whether you have mixed feelings about this time of the year, like me or you’re one of those Shiny Happy People like in the REM song, enjoy yourself, hold close the people important to you and hope and pray to your higher power of choice for a good year ahead of us all. Now go get wasted. As someone once told me ‘For you people its just another reason to have parties’.

You’re fuckin’ right about that sunshine!

Where’d all the good people go?

Reading the news today made me think of this song from Jack Johnson’s 2005 album ‘In Between Dreams’ which isn’t his best (that would be his 2003 album, ‘On And On’) but it does have this song. His smooth, mellow sound makes excellent driving music, it’s prevented me from commiting vehicular homicide on more than one occasion.

This is all gonna end in tears: The story of NewsX.

December 21st, 2008

NewsXAbout this time last year I already wanted to quit NewsX, barely three months after joining the place. What went wrong so soon? I had such high hopes for NewsX.

A network started by Peter Mukerjea for chrissakes! He headed STAR TV! The news channel would be headed by Vir Sanghvi! One of the few Indian journalists I knew off, he wrote and spoke extremely well and I respected him immensely. These were excellent credentials to me and despite it being a news channel I signed up because I thought I would get to make some great programming and I would learn a whole lot from the Brits that Peter brought in to get the channel off the ground. The same Brits who hired me as a Producer for the channel.

I’ll be the first to admit I’ve made a boat-load of mistakes in my life but NewsX has to be among the biggest. Where do I even begin?

The Brits.
